Scouting skate spots along the Mississippi
Pro-skater and all around good dude Nate Sherwood and I had an idea to try setting up some shots on a bridge along a closed section of Lincoln Highway in eastern Iowa. Steel rivets and ornamental cement work conspired to say, “No.” So, with the majority of the day still ahead of us, we cooked up Plan B: Cruise over to Clinton, Iowa and other points along the Mississippi River to see what kind of trouble we could get into.
Highlights included a pair of confrontational sandwich makers; a stop at an abandoned army depot; a surprisingly nice skatepark in Hanover, Illinois; little dudes on BMX bikes with an impressive lack of situational awareness; an incredibly well-stocked liquor store with a casino inside; and a friendly barmaid with some cherry beer on tap that was actually really good (but I’ll be damned if I can remember the name). The weather was sticky and hot (more like late-July than early-June), but it was a great day nevertheless and we found plenty of spots worth revisiting.
